I did this with a single tang on both sides but only went up a few inches in order to keep the tangs and mast through bolt below the cabin sole. Instead of bolting to the mast step I welded the tangs to it so they hug the mast. This would only work if your mast fits inside the step.

Question for the group...I am determining how to secure mast to step. In lieu of drilling through step and a very thick mast base, I thought I could create an inverted V with 2 SS 6"-10" tangs on both sides of the mast (one bolt through mast at top of V and 4 individual bolts to mast step). By doing this I would be able drill further up the mast with thinner walls and presumably less structural degradation to mast...

Thoughts?
