If you are using a police whistle as your sound signal, remember to put it in your mouth upside-down (with the opening on the bottom) to let the water drain out.
For the electronic division, I highly recommend the GRIB (gridded binary) files provided by saildocs.com. These are free and available to all boats with even a low-bandwidth email link, so I think these are allowed under racing rule 41c.
