11:12pm. Thursday June 18. Raining pretty good and so it's awfully nice to be under a roof tonight. It's fun to look at the www.iboattrack.com site and see all the boats in Sippican (Marion) Harbor ready to make the trek toward the rock tomorrow. Boat tracking brings an extra little magic to this event IMHO. We raced J80's at the club tonight and had to use every once of discipline not to join the Goslings Party that looked to be going pretty well around 8:45 -- smarter to get home and pack the final items -- so close to making a very different decision!
So a lot of Captains and crew will dream of those last few things on their To Do list. After coffee and an early morning flurry of checking things off, those pre-start lists start to lose relevancy and we turn our CPU power onto actual racing-focused challenges. Amazing how much work goes into this endeavor and each boat has unique problems to solve and circumstances to overcome to get here. Good show to all those boats that had a long delivery just to get here.
It's a great race. And for a lot of reasons. Everyone can list their own (and maybe we should) but one of the reasons is because of the incredible quality and quantity of volunteer hours that goes into this race. No names because there are too many. But having seen it all in action just a bit, we are beyond fortunate to have smart, thoughtful, experienced people who believe that this great idea is worth working for. It's people from a number of different clubs, people with all kinds of skills and talents and the common denominator of loving Marion to Bermuda. Thank you! And also to the everyone who contributed to this site.
So here we go...headed to one of the most beautiful places on our ocean planet and a chance to power down the blackberry, enjoy and or navigate by the stars, find our team's strengths, practice patience in close quarters, steer down a big wave at night and get that rollercoaster sensation at ten miles an hour. Sail fast and have fun. Almost taste the Dark and Stormy's i missed tonight but they'll taste even better on the rock.
