Marion-Bermuda Race

Race to Bermuda!

Playing off of Dan Cooney's most recent posting, the Marion Bermuda Race machine is up, running and healthy. Let's take a quick look at the numbers; 13 monohulls and 1 multihull have entered as of today - that is not far off last years numbers which were heavily front end loaded, 9 new skippers (not included in the entry number) are in the new Mentor Program and last but certianly not least, 66 interested party's are participanting in this blog, the first of it's kind. I would say we are off to a good start and have some upcoming activities that should help grow the participation.

One of those activities is “So You Want to Race to Bermuda” presentation.

This is the theme of a one hour presentation being given by members of the Marion Bermuda Cruising Yacht Race Organizing Committee.

Many sailors want to make the passage to Bermuda and the Marion Bermuda Race is a great way to go, but there are so many questions that must be answered:
Do I need a life raft?
What communication equipment do I need?
How long a trip is it?
What kind of watch schedule must I keep?
What customs requirements are there?
And of course -
How much is it all going to cost?

Race organizers are sure there are dozens more questions that are just as important. This presentation will answer the majority of them. This is a not-to-be-missed opportunity to see what it takes for you, your crew and your boat to race to the beautiful island of Bermuda safely (and maybe win a little silver along the way). Tell you friends that may be near one of the locations about the presentation.

The schedule and locations are as follows; Beverly Yacht Club, Marion, MA Thursday, January 15th., Stamford Yacht Club, Stamford, CT, Wednesday, January 21st, and Seawanhaka Corithian Yacht Club, Oyster Bay, NY, Thursday, January 22nd. All presentation begin at 7:00 PM.

Another important event that will soon be upon us is the Safety at Sea Symposium sanctioned by US Sailing. Check out the post from Dan Cooney for all of the details on this important event.

You will also be seeing articles surrounding the race over the next couple of months in popular regional publications. WindCheck from the Long Island Sound area will be publishing a story on the race in their mid-January issue. Points East, out of Maine but reaching down the New England coast is running a article in their mid-winer issue to be published in February. If you are not a subscriber to these publications, be sure to pick a copy up at your local marine outlet.

Daylight is getting longer!
